Symposium Mammographicum (http://www.sympmamm.org.uk/) is a registered charity founded in 1979. Its principal aims are ‘to stimulate and support research and disseminate knowledge about the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of breast disease’. The major event organised by the Charity is the biennial Symposium. This time it took place on 3-5 July in Liverpool. EBreast project was represented in the symposium by a poster presentation that gives an overview of European radiographers’ challenges in mammography education and clinical practice. The poster is based on an integrative literature review aimed to collect evidence for the development of e-learning modules in this project.

In addition to the quantitative research approach a qualitative approach is implemented in the research activities of the project to clarify the challenges of mammography education and clinical practice identified in our prior surveys. For this purpose two focus group interviews were carried out over Skype. A focus group interview, involving teachers and radiographers from all the participating countries took place on 21.4.2016., another interview with radiography students from all the participating countries was carried out on 26.5.2016. The interview results are analysed using thematic analysis. These results give additional evidence for the development of the e-learning modules in this project.
Data for the first research study were collected from February 21 to March 31 in 2016, involving 97 radiography students, 16 members of academic staff and 140 clinical radiographers in Finland, Estonia, Norway, Portugal and Switzerland. It was a challenging task to collect data in different languages in all the partner countries and to compile the data into one statistical database. Results of the survey help to identify the main difficulties, challenges, opportunities and needs in mammography education in the participating countries from the student, teacher and clinical practitioner perspectives. These results provide the evidence base for the development of the e-learning modules in this project.
The very first transnational meeting of the project group was carried out on 1-2 February in 2016 by the institution coordinating this project, Tartu Tervishoiu Kõrgkool in Estonia. This first face-to-face meeting was aimed at a number of issues, involving an opportunity to learn more and directly about each other, to specify in detail the whole project plan and finalise the survey tools (questionnaires) for the planned research activities. A transnational meeting is also a way to learn more about the partner institutions and local cultural specificities. So the members of the host institution introduced the partners the radiography and nursing skills labs installed in the college of Tartu and organised a short tour in Tartu city.
